Key è una robot dalle sembianze di una ragazza di 16-17 anni che vive insun piccolo villaggio di montagna insieme a suo nonno, scienziato specializzato in robotica.Un giorno, mentre si trova a scuola le comunicano che il nonno è morto e, tornata a casa l'assistente dello scienziato, il sig. Wakagi, le consegna un nastro con le sue ultime volontà. Nel nastro il nonno le dice che c'è un modo per riuscire a farla diventare umana, cioè trovare 30.000 amici, persone che le vogliano bene e che possano arrivare a piangere per lei.A questo punto Key decide che per trovare così tanta gente deve recarsi a Tokyo. Ma in città troverà molti pericoli ed ostacoli, tra cui Ajo, il capo di un'industria intenzionata a costruire robot da combattimento che mostra uno strano interesse per il mondo dello spettacolo, ed un fanatico religioso convinto che in lei risieda un grande potere. Ad aiutarla ci saranno Sakura, amica d'infanzia di Key, e Tomoyo, presidente del fan club di Miho Utsuse (l'idol più famosa del momento).s Mostra trama completa
